Preclinical Research Laboratory

The Center collaborates with the Department of Engineering for Innovation in Medicine – Innovative Biomedicine Section, University of Verona (Director: Prof. Giuseppe Lippi), conducting translational research on cystic fibrosis, Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome and other rare diseases.
The Preclinical Research Laboratory has been involved in translational research on cystic fibrosis since the 1980s. In recent years, the laboratory has benefited from exhaustive technological upgrading, made possible by the generous support of the Veneto Region Cystic Fibrosis Center and the Italian Cystic Fibrosis League (Veneto Region).
Many research projects have been developed in recent years. Ongoing collaborations with important international centers include those with the Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland, USA) and the SickKids Paediatric Hospital (Toronto, Canada); the Center also collaborates closely with many hospitals and universities in Italy.
The Preclinical Research Laboratory’s prime aim is to develop lines of research that can support clinical investigation of cystic fibrosis in the medium term. To this end, the CFC Verona Clinical Research Center and the Preclinical Research Laboratory are jointly engaged in a variety of projects.

Main areas of study

  • Preclinical development of innovative drugs for cystic fibrosis and ribosomopathies
  • Mechanisms regulating lung inflammation in CF
  • Pathogenetic mechanisms in Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome
  • Clinical development of translational readthrough-inducing drugs (TRIDs)
